A Guide To GPS Navigation Systems
GPS, short for Global Positioning System, is a technology by which GPS receivers can be constantly tracked via numerous satellites in orbit around the earth. This intelligent equipment has found its most common usage in Satellite Navigation systems, or Sat Nav. In great numbers of people`s lives, these have completely replaced complicated and time-consuming maps. GPS systems can always track down their position and plan journeys quickly and easily. They can guide you to your destination, finding the simplest or fastest route, taking out much of the hassle of driving and travelling.

How It Works
GPS works by using at least 3 satellites at any one time to locate the receiver. These satellites work together to combine enough information to calculate, with impressive accuracy of within about 10m, the location of the GPS system. Each satellite is essentially able, through the reflection of waves, to measure its own distance from the receiver. By finding where the distances of the receiver from numerous satellites intersect, an accurate location can be pinpointed. This information is then translated into an easy-to-read placement on a map and transmitted to the Sat Nav user.

The Types of Sat Nav
There are three major types of GPS system, all of which are particularly useful in different ways and more suitable for different purposes and users.

In Car: Sat Nav systems are essentially in-built features in certain cars. They tend to be integrated into the car`s entertainment system and are thus usually larger and less compact than other types of GPS system. Few of these are touch screen models often making them less user-friendly. The information on them is also less likely to be regularly updated than on other types.

Portable: GPS systems are currently the most commonly bought and used model. Their portability allows them to be used in any number of different cars and they are easy to install and remove. The most well-known manufactures include TomTom, Garmin and Navman and their user-friendliness, flexibility and regular updates make them very popular.

PDA Based: systems are increasingly being fitted into cars as standard. Many systems are state-of-the-art and are able to inform drivers of traffic and road conditions in real time. In particular, the likes of TomTom, iGO and Co-Pilot have pioneered this growing trend.

Choosing a GPS System
There are numerous factors to consider when choosing a vehicle tracking system. Firstly, the type of Sat Nav that would best suit one`s use should be decided. Another factor is the system`s range and detail; some GPS trackers cover all European roads, whereas others are solely for the UK. Checking up on other features such as reliability, accuracy and speed of calculation can also be very useful. Finally, checking its compatibility with your car and ensuring things such as the power lead is long enough is important.

More GPS Navigation Information:

Do you find that you have a lot of speeding tickets? Maybe you even have trouble remembering where to reduce your speed? There are of course many ways to solve your problems. Even if you don’t have speeding problems you probably find you have navigation problems when you are in a new area of the city. Undetected is just one company that offers satellite navigation and speed camera detectors. If you are interested in GPS satellite navigation you should check out the products available and compare pricing.

Undetected offers you a range of products including a dual satellite navigation system and speed camera. These units will help you navigate the city as well as reduce you speeding tickets, traffic violation fines, and traffic accidents. The Indic8tor is one of the latest GPS satellite navigation systems.

This GPS will warn you when you enter a new speed zone, aid you in safe driving, and give you voice alerts. The voice will allow you to know when you are exceeding the limits as well as offer guidance. Another GPS navigation system is the Snooper S3 GPS. This GPS stores geographical coordinates and even tells you of "black spots" on the road. A black spot is usually considered an area where a lot of accidents happen. The Snooper S3 GPS will compare your position with a GPS antenna to give you the most up to date information on speeds and accident spots.

There are many other GPS navigation systems available and tips on how to use them. You will want to understand the laws of your area as well as how these systems can help you reduce accidents or violations. Undetected will offer you information about the law as well as facts about the products they sell to help you find the best product for your vehicle.
